WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our Guardian Camera Club group.
Ann-Marie Taylor lives in Rudheath and photography gave her a focus during a difficult time in her life, allowing her walk and take pictures of the Cheshire countryside and further afield.
When and why did you take up photography?
Several years ago, I suffered with depression and anxiety. I started walking and taking pictures of the places I went, as it took my mind off how I was feeling. I was able to switch off as it gave me something else to focus on. For those few hours, I was out in the fresh air, seeing new places and not having heavy thoughts in my head.

What do you love about taking pictures?
Taking photos helped me to focus on exploring what is out there. Capturing a moment in time, a second of my life, and then being able to look back and remember that moment, that time, that place. The beauty that surrounds us and taking a moment to look at things in a different way and capture it, is very special.
Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?
When I was at my low point, I began walking in the Peak District with a friend. We explored places I had never been before and we found lots of hidden gems. Capturing those places and being able to look back at the pictures, seeing how far I had come, really helped. Having that escape got me through a sad time in my life.

What is your favourite subject matter and why?
For me it’s about the places I go - the landscape, the animals, anything to do with nature and being outdoors. I love the seasons and watching how things change and I enjoy capturing these magic moments, which will never be the same.
What do you enjoy about being part of the Guardian Camera Club?
I enjoy being part of a group with people who love to take pictures. Everyone has their own style, theme and reason for taking photos. People are very friendly and there is no negativity. It doesn’t matter if you have a fancy camera or mobile phone as every picture taken is special to each person and the fact they can share it and receive positive feedback is great.

If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?
We went to Vancouver a few years ago doing a road trip. I wanted to go to Lake Louise and see the glaciers but due to bad weather I didn’t get there. So, for me it would be to go back and see for myself the beauty of that place and take my own photos.
