WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a returning feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our Guardian Camera Club group.
First up is Cathie Leather from Weaverham who loves photographing her six-year-old daughter, Lexie, and capturing those special moments in time.
When and why did you take up photography?
Photography has always been a big part of my life. My mum would always take photos of us when we were growing up, especially on holidays. My older brother is a professional photographer and I go to him for hints and tips. I used to just ‘point and shoot’ but as the years have passed, I’ve started to focus more and pay attention to the finer details. I take the majority of my photos on my phone as it’s readily available, but I have treated myself to a more professional camera, as I’m finding it frustrating that the lenses on camera phones are wide angled.
What do you love about taking pictures?
I love capturing moments in time. For example, my daughter loves water and capturing the moment of excitement on her face when she’s playing in it is the best feeling.
Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?
I like taking pictures outside in natural light. I don’t have a specific place but I usually end up taking pictures of my daughter on our adventures. However, we have a favourite spot on the River Dane in Northwich that we visit regularly and beaches such as Formby.
What is your favourite subject matter and why?
Adventures with my daughter. I love watching her growing up and capturing those moments. It’s also something to look back on and reminisce about. It’s amazing how much she remembers at such a young age.
What do you enjoy about being part of the Guardian Camera Club?
I enjoy sharing my photos with others who love photography and joining in with the weekly post to share my photos with the wider community.
If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?
I’d like to do more photography at night. Bing able to see and capture the Milky Way would be awesome.
