WELCOME to Behind the Lens, a returning feature that shines a light on the talented photographers in our Guardian Camera Club group.
This week, we’re looking at the photography of Wendy Mahon from Weaverham who loves capturing a moment in time and being able to keep it forever.
When and why did you take up photography?
I first started taking photos when my Aunty May bought me a camera. I was about nine or ten. I took pictures of family and friends but back then we had to wait a while for the pictures to be developed. Years later, I worked as a teaching assistant in a local school. I took pictures of the children on school trips, sports days and plays as well as clubs and nativity performances.
What do you love about taking pictures?
I love capturing a scene, a moment in time, and being able to keep it forever. I also love seeing people’s faces when you show them photographs. I used to have two sets printed so that I could give one away to the people in the pictures.
Where is your favourite place to take pictures and why?
My favourite place is along the River Weaver, Dutton Locks and the Trent and Mersey canal near Acton Bridge. I love seeing the ducklings, cygnets and all the other birds and wildlife.
What is your favourite subject matter and why?
I wouldn't say I had a favourite subject as I love taking pictures of anything and everything - except myself. That's why I like being behind the camera! I tend to take pictures of butterflies and bees as we get quite a lot in our garden. I also enjoy taking pictures of my grandchildren and seeing how much they change in such a short time.
What do you enjoy about being part of the Guardian Camera Club?
I enjoy being a member of the Guardian Camera Club and having the challenge of a new topic/theme every week. It’s great seeing everyone's interpretation. There are so many talented people in the group.
If you could photograph anyone/any place/anything, who/what would it be?
My dream picture would be of a kingfisher! I have often seen them along the canal but they are too quick for me.
