MY BROTHER sent me a cutting of an article by Ian Ross from the Northwich Guardian, August 13, regarding children playing football called “nuisance”.
I spent all my childhood until 1956 playing in Malam Drive, Rudheath.
I remember that there were some 18 to 20 children living near and in the bottom part of Malam Drive and we usually played in the circle; we called it the Pan because of its shape.
Football and all kinds of ball games were played and we never broke any windows. We played skipping with a very long rope, hopscotch, marbles, tic and all kinds of team games, and no-one ever complained.
We also had a special street party. We were a community.
I believe that children have recently been told to play outside, as too much time is spent playing computer games.
There were fewer cars when I played outside but I noticed in the accompanying photograph to the article that cars are parked on the whole of the footpath.
We played some games on those same footpaths. This means that someone pushing a pram or a wheelchair has to walk on the road.
Please let the children play in the fresh air while they are able, so that they can look back on happy memories, like me, on their childhood spent in Malam Drive.
