Having sat on Middlewich’s high street for 33 years, A&J Devaney Family Butchers has its fair share of history.
Devaney’s opened in 1991, though before that there had been a butcher on that site since around 1944.
In 1992, the shop was given ‘The best pork sausage in Cheshire’ award.
The importance of buying from local businesses is stressed by the owner, who has said, “It helps the local economy, helps local industry, we can create more jobs, if you can support us more we can employ more people. We also use local ingredients, we get lots of stock from Lowes Farm Shop. It's very important that people shop locally. It’s better than giving it to supermarkets and CEOs who make hundreds of thousands a year”.
One thing that sets Devaney’s apart from other butcher shops is that they offer a variety of ready-made meats and ‘fifteen-minute meals’.
“We’ve evolved, we’re not just a butcher’s shop anymore. Some people think of us more as a deli now”.
Sweet and sour pork, stir fries and pies are all offered, as well as ‘beef pods’, beef with cheese inside and garlic on top.
“We’re creating something, we’re more like chefs in a way”.
Devaney’s can be found on 45 Wheelock Street, Middlewich and is open 08:00 to 14:00 most days.
