NORTHWICH Victoria and 1874 Northwich marched on in the FA Cup in their opening game of the new football season.

Vics twice came from behind to go on and defeat Squires Gate 3-2 at Barton Stadium in their Emirates FA Cup extra preliminary round tie.

They suffered an early setback with the Blackpool outfit going in front after three minutes through the head of Regan Crossley.

But The Trickies levelled matters 13 minutes later through Marcus Perry from a corner when he rocketed a half volley into the top of the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Crossley did the business with his head at the back post again as the seasiders regained the lead in the 26th minute.

However, Dylan Switters struck in timely fashion for the hosts.

He curled in a free kick from all of 35 yards four minutes into first-half added time to send the teams back to the changing rooms on level par.

Despite four goals in the first half, it turned out one was enough after the break and it came from the head of Joe Keyworth in the 70th minute.

After a corner was cleared, the ball was sent back into the box and Keyworth was in the right place to nick a header over the goalkeeper into the far corner.

Vics will travel to Barnoldswick or Brighouse in the next round on August 17, with their tie to be decided by replay on Wednesday after finishing 0-0 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 1874 ended the hopes of Stockport Town 2-1 on away turf.

Joel Jones put the visitors ahead after 12 minutes.

Matty Fenton’s long throw was only half half cleared to Ash Wardle, who fired the ball across the goal for Jones to steer home.

1874 doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time.

A corner fell to Jacson Coppack who thumped the ball on the half volley to the underside of the crossbar and it bounced over the line.

Tom Morris was not sure the ball had crossed the line at the time and headed the ball into the net to make sure.

Daniel Lewis pulled a goal back for Stockport Town in the 56th minute but it was 1874’s day.

Their reward in the preliminary round on August 17 is a trip to Longridge Town, who defeated Cheadle Town 2-0 at home on Saturday.

League action continued for Winsford United and Barnton in North West Counties League First Division South.

Blues were 2-0 ahead at Cammell Laird thanks to two goals from Jack Woolley but the hosts completed a comeback for a share of the spoils.

Woolley’s first effort was from the penalty spot after the ball had been handled in the area.

For his second, he headed a Blake Robinso corner into the top corner.

Lairds completed their comeback with a free-kick in the late stages.

Barnton were 2-0 winners at Cheadle Heath Nomads.

Lee Turkington’s looping header beat the home keeper in the 49th minute and then Amir Hajri produced an excellent finish to a team goal on the break to seal the deal in the 80th minute.

It was better from The Villagers, who had been defeated 2-1 at home by Sandbach on Wednesday – Ryan Gibson bagging their goal.
