WINSFORD United will be aiming to make FA Vase history on Saturday.
If they defeat Darwen at home in the second round, they would equal their best run in the competition of 12 years ago.
They have the form to give them the confidence to do so.
The stunning 3-2 win away to North West Counties League First Division South leaders Stafford Town on Saturday was a 10th victory on the bounce for second-placed Blues.
In fact, they have not lost on their last 14 outings – with their last defeat coming in the league at Eccleshall on August 26.
Blues knocked out higher-division AFC Liverpool 4-0 in the previous round, having also despatched Maine Road 3-1 and Litherland Remyca 4-0 at the qualifying stage.
Darwen can make similar Vase history, as they have also never gone beyond the third round – a level they have also reached only once, two years ago.
They have sent packing from the Vase Harrogate Railway Athletic (3-0), Maltby Main (3-1) – both at home – and Dearne & District 1-0 to get this far in 2024/25.
Darwen play in the equivalent First Division North in the NWCFL, in which they are currently placed 10th.
Action is due to get underway at Barton Stadium at 3pm.
As long as no replay is required, Blues are scheduled to host Abbey Hulton United in the second round of the Edward Case Cup on Tuesday, kick-off 7.45pm.
Barnton, who have no fixture on Saturday, will also be in Edward Case Cup action on Tuesday when they visit Ashville.
Over at the U Lock It Stadium, Witton Albion will entertain a Clitheroe side that are still looking for their first win away from home in any competition this season.
Albion head into the Northern Premier League West contest on the back of their 1-1 draw at Wythenshawe at the weekend.
The Lancashire visitors have not won in their last four games and will visit having been beaten 3-0 at Widnes last time out.
Witton Albion are offering free entry to Saturday's game with Clitheroe to all serving Armed Forces and Veterans.
They are also offering free entry to all emergency service and NHS workers.
In order to gain free entry to the stadium, show your relevant ID at the players and officials entrance before the game.
Before kick off on Saturday there will be a short remembrance service.
1874 Northwich host OJM Black Country in the Midland League Premier Division at Townfield on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
Greens manager Chris Herbert will be all too aware that 10th-placed OJM, who are based in the King’s Norton area of Birmingham, have not lost in the league on their travels this season.
Their last four away league games have ended in draws, while at the weekend they were convincing 4-0 victors at home to Stourport Swifts.
1874, currently fifth on the ladder but with a minimum two games in hand on the sides above them, have won one of their last six league outings.
Herbert handed a debut to Theo Robinson in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with leaders Lichfield City.
The defender was released from Nottingham Forest and 1874 moved quickly to bring the 18-year-old to Townfield.
Robinson has represented Wales up to under 19s level.
Herbert said: “It is great to get Theo with us, he is a player I’ve seen a lot of at Nottingham Forest, he has real top quality at left back or centre back.
“Left side of defence is a position we are short in and you don’t get better than Theo.
“He will be huge for us while we have him, and we will be huge for his progress in football.”
Robinson said: “Chris called me and wanted to get me in at 1874 and I’ve jumped at the chance.
“He has told me about how big of an experience senior football will be at this level and learn the tougher side of the game.
“I’m physical in my game and I can give as good as I get on that side, but I am comfortable at both left back and centre back and can create and link up as well as chip in at the other end.
“I’m here to progress and help the club and hopefully help get us at the right end to get promoted.”
Robinson was brought off at half-time in what Herbert confirmed was a tactical decision, needing to get more height into his side due to the amount of big men in the Lichfield side and how well they were playing the long-ball game.
The change nearly paid off, with the Greens leading 2-1 until the hosts scrambled home a late leveller.
“He never did much wrong, but what we did notice with the ball going so long all the time we had to make us bigger to make sure that didn’t cost us and he was slightly smaller than some of their big lads,” said Herbert.
“He did well otherwise but we had to change it and go with a different plan.”
Meanwhile, Northwich Victoria return to action away to Romulus in the Midland Football League Premier Division on Saturday.
It will be Matt Barnes’ side’s first outing since their 2-0 League Cup exit at the hands of Uttoxeter Town on Tuesday, October 29.
Vics are without a win since the 3-2 success at Wolverhampton Casuals on October 1 and are currently placed 11th on the ladder.
Romulus lie in 12th position, just one point and one place behind Vics after having lost their last three games.
Earlier in the season, Vics had a fairly comfortable 3-0 victory in the home fixture, but Romulus have improved since.
