REECE Davies and Jacob Kirwan were the heroes as Winsford United secured a last-gasp win in a thrilling clash with table-toppers Stafford Town.

Davies netted the 90th-minute decisive goal in the 3-2 win, while Kirwan then pulled off a magnificent point-blank save to make sure Blues held on for victory.

The success leaves second-placed Winsford just two points behind Stafford in the North West Counties Football League Division One South table.

Blake Robinson put Winsford in front with a scrambled effort in the 38th minute.

The advantage was shortlived though, Patryk Mazurkiewicz equalising within 60 seconds and then putting his side in front in the 52nd minute.

Blues benefited from a stroke of luck when home goalkeeper Adam Jenkins punched the ball into his own net as matters were levelled in the 81st minute.

And then as the contest looked like heading for a draw, Davies converged onto a brilliant pass by Matty Birchall before rounding the keeper and finishing what proved to be the winner in great style.

1874 Northwich also had a top-of-the-table date with Midland Football League Premier Division leaders Lichfield City.

It is a mark of their progress that they were disappointed to leave Brownsfield Road with a point, rather than three.

The Greens were looking good for the win until Callum Rudd scrambled home a 90th-minute goal to give the hosts a share of the spoils at 2-2.

Chris Herbert’s 74 side had twice taken the lead.

Firstly, Tom Morris headed home in the 27th minute only for defensive errors allowing Callum Griffin to restore parity three minutes later.

A handball in the box led to Scott McGowan putting the Greens back in front from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute.

Mike Shorthouse pulled off a stunning top-corner save for 1874 five minutes later before he was undone by the scruffy late drama.

Witton Albion also bagged a decent point on their travels to fifth-placed Wythenshawe.

Isaac Graham gave Ben Harrison’s side the lead in the 12th minute but Michael Phenix squared the scoring shortly before half-time, with no further goals added.

The result leaves Witton 11th on the congested ladder, just four points adrift of their hosts with games in hand on many of the sides above them.

Barnton were beaten 2-0 at home by Market Drayton Town in the NWCFL Division One South.

Goals were scored by Sam Finney (37mins) and Nicky Parker (47mins).
