WAYNE Riley scored the goal that sent Charlton Athletic crashing out of the FA Cup, then set his sights on a bigger prize.
The 20-year-old kept his cool after running on to Michael Connor’s pass, sliding the ball past Darren Randolph to earn Vics a famous win.
He said: “I want to get Liverpool down here now, bring them on!”
Riley, in his first full season playing for Northwich after filling in at the end of last term, was stuck for words in front of the gathered national press after emerging from the hosts’ changing room.
Asked how he felt at the prospect of becoming famous, he laughed.
“It’s mad isn’t it,” he said.
“I’ll probably get ambushed by most of my mates when I’m out tonight. I’m buzzing after that.”
Riley’s goal, his fifth of the season, came eight minutes from time.
He told the Guardian he did not remember much about his magic moment.
“The gaffer gave me a chance and I got out there and did my job,” he said.
“I just saw the ball drop into my path and run onto it. I got a shot in and luckily it went in.
“I didn’t know what to do after that.
“I ran over to the fans to share the moment with them. They were amazing today and really helped us.”
Former Mid-Cheshire College student Riley, who pulls pints at the Legh Arms in Adlington when not training with Northwich, said his winner was his best moment in football to date.
“It’s off the scale,” he added.
“I’ve scored a few goals this season before today but nothing comes close to this.”
