WAYNE Riley became a Vics hero when he scored the goal that sent former Premier League giants Charlton Athletic crashing out of the FA Cup.
The former Mid-Cheshire College student raced clear to steer in the winner eight minutes from time, earning his team a famous victory in front of the television cameras.
It was no less than the hosts deserved.
Their victory was no fluke, they simply outplayed their League One opponents.
Riley, faced with Addicks keeper Darren Randolph, steered the ball through the keeper’s legs to cue jubilant scenes at the Victoria Stadium.
They should have led at the interval.
Randolph tipped over Mat Bailey’s header from Lee Elam’s corner, then the Charlton keeper made miraculous finger-tip stop to deny Michael Connor from close range.
Charlton’s best, and only, chance fell to sub Deon Burton, but Ian Herring’s last-ditch block snuffed out the danger on Vics’ special day.
