WITTON Albion recorded their fourth straight win on their travels to move back up to second spot in the UniBond League’s Division One South.
After a slow start, hampered no doubt by a traffic-hit three-hours journey to Willenhall, they ran out comfortable winners for the third time this term against the Midlanders.
They now trail leaders Sheffield FC by three points.
Stephen Jackson in the hosts’ goal was not called upon to make a save until midway through the first half, clutching on to Carl Ruffer’s header following a corner.
Jamie Tandy, from a central position, then under-hit his attempt to giving Willenhall’s custodian an easy save.
Steve Foster then appeared to be fouled by Wayne Brown in the area, but referee Mark Weaver who booked the striker for simulation.
Foster then turned provider but John McAliskey, making his first league start since switching from Salford City, headed wide of the left upright.
After the break Peter Heler, who appeared more comfortable on his favoured right flank, brought a good save from Jackson as he pushed the ex-Burscough man’s effort around the right post.
On the hour Paul Booth got down the right touchline, sending in a ball in that saw debutant Ryan Broadhead get in a shot that was blocked by a mass of defenders’ legs on the line.
Broadhead then went close with a header following Tandy’s flag kick to the near left post.
Town gained confidence from their escapes, producing a period of pressure.
However the closest they got to a goal was when keeper Joe Clegg was agile enough to stop defender Ruffer from putting through his own goal.
The visitors broke through on 70 minutes.
Foster, involved in the initial build-up, popped up in the box only for his shot to come back off the keeper’s body.
Paul Henry dived to head home the rebound.
minutes later Foster was guilty of a poor miss from the penalty spot after he had been bundled over by substitute Jamall Pinnock, sending his kick well wide of the right upright.
Witton’s leading scorer made amends soon afterwards, heading the ball back over Jackson after Willenhall failed to clear.
Six minutes from time Tandy’s corner was flicked across the box by McAliskey only for Brian Pritchard to be denied as a defender scrambled the ball away.
It only reached Heler, who opened his goal account for Albion with a fierce shot from distance that left Jackson unable to react.
