NORTHWICH Victoria will host former Premier League outfit Charlton Athletic in the first round proper of the FA Cup.
The Addicks, relegated from English football’s top tier in 2007, were paired with Andy Preece’s men in today’s draw at the Football Association’s HQ in Soho Square.
They are due at the Victoria Stadium on the weekend of November 7 and 8.
“It’s a great achievement to reach the first round,” said Preece before today’s draw.
“That’s the aim when you start in the second qualifying round like we did and it’s fair to say we’ve been fortunate so far.
“We’ve been at home each time against opponents from a lower level.”
He has his wish of another home draw.
But Charlton, currently second in League One and therefore ranked 84 places above Vics, have never lost a match against a non-league team.
They were relegated from the Championship in 2008, but have recovered to become contenders to return at the first attempt this time around.
The men from the Valley are the highest-ranked team Vics have faced in an FA Cup tie since their third round trip to Premier League giants Sunderland in January 2006.
Steve Burr’s team, who went on to win the Conference North title the same season, lost 3-0.
“I can’t ask for any more than to be at home again,” said Preece.
“A Football League club would be great, it doesn’t matter who.”
A crowd of 2,615 watched Vics defeat FC United of Manchester in yesterday’s fourth qualifying round, but more can be expected when Charlton come to town.
The winners are in line to pocket £18,000 in prize money.
Further details, including ticket information, will follow in the coming days.
