THE higher-league class of Tranmere Rovers proved too much for Winsford United in the Cheshire Senior Cup last night.
Blues did look like they were taking their chance to shine on the big stage at Prenton Park when they took a 3-1 lead – Matty Birchall cancelled out Sol Solomon’s opener before Danny Kerr’s brace put the visitors in a position of strength.
However, Sam Taylor halving the deficit proved to be the start of their downfall as the EFL side flexed their muscles.
They scored five times after the interval to run out 8-3 victors, with Taylor and Josh Davison completing hat-tricks while Kieron Morris was also on the scoresheet.
Attention turns back to North West Counties League matters on Saturday as they prepare for a ‘derby’ clash with neighbours Barnton, who warmed up in stunning fashion by thrashing Cammell Laird 7-1 in the Macron Cup last night.
Lee Turkington opened the scoring after just two minutes before a Sam Smith brace put them 3-0 up inside 18 minutes, only for Joel Whalley to give the visitors a foothold in the game before half-time.
However, the Villagers cantered clear in the final quarter as Matthew Williams struck before Smith and Turkington both completed their hat-tricks.
Saturday's game at Barton Stadium kicks off at 3pm.
