Stuart Greenhalgh brings us the latest news from the Mid Cheshire crown green bowling scene…

CASTLE sports A rounded off their Mid Cheshire Crown Green Bowling League season with a 207-125 home win against Alsager A with their best winner being Matt Hamman, who won 21-4.

This kept Castle’s lead intact and gave them their sixth straight Premier League title, though this was one of the closest seasons for years with the gap to Wharton Cons A being only nine points.

Wharton Cons A completed their season with a 207-138 home win against Castle sports B.

Owen Cookson was Wharton’s best winner, winning 21-7, while Castle’s only winner Paul Hennin won 21-18.

Crewe PO snatched third spot by beating Kingswood at home 210-106.

Lee Thursfield delivered Crewe PO’s best result, winning 21-4.

Kingswood’s best result was Graham Donnelly just getting beaten 21-20.

The match score also confirmed that Kingswood would join Alsager in Section One next year.

Frodsham Red Lion A, who at the start of the season looked to be challenging for the top spot, ended the season in fourth place after winning 179-166 at Owley Wood A.

Fred Worrall led the way with a great 21-2 win for Frodsham, while Robbie Williams weighed in with a 21-6 win for the home side.

Section One ended as expected with Shavington gaining promotion, more than 200 points clear of Owley Wood B in second place.

Crosstown and bottom side Sandbach Park A were both relegated.

Section Two ended very much as expected with Victoria 152 points ahead of second place Barnton CC A, who did a great job of keeping up with the very experienced Victoria team.

On their day, Victoria field a team which have experience of playing at the highest level of bowls. Do not be surprised if these two teams are at the top of Section One next year.

Wharton Rec and Helsby B will drop into Section Three in 2025.

In Section Three, Middlewich RBL B are promoted as champions with Shavington B in second place.

Rudheath Bowls C and Hartford A were both relegated into Section Four.

Comberbach C are promoted to Section three as champions of Section Four and joining them will be Tarporley B.

Davenham B ended up bottom of Section Four so I hope they have a better season next time around.

Meanwhile, the final of the Whitby Cup was played at Owley Wood No1 between Wharton Cons A and Comberbach A.

The Whitby Cup is a pairs team event and handicapped, Wharton Cons +17 and Comberbach +25.

Wharton won three matches and Comberbach two.

Phil Cookson and Joe Tomkinson had a remarkable 21-1 win, while Comberbach’s best win was produced by Nigel Blackley and David Thurwell 21-15.

Wharton Cons regained the trophy, winning 112-94 including the handicap.

In other news, Castle Sports are still in contention to round off their season with another trophy.

They started the eight-man World Club Championship competition against Derbyshire Park BC with a full house on Sunday, beating them 168-115.

They followed this by beating Birchley St Mary’s 151-123 to make it through to this Sunday’s final day at Spen Victoria.

Quarter-finals: Greville Arms v Houghton, Castle Sports v Esclusham, Crossgates v Castlefields, George & Dragon v Thongsbridge.

Two teammates contested the final of the Middlewich RBL Open on Sunday.

The way this year has gone it should not be a surprise that the teammates were from Castle Sports.

Steven Morrey and Andy Hamman played out the final, with Hamman winning 21-14.

On Saturday, 32 pairs turned out at Owley Wood for the BCGBA Centenary Pairs.

Emma Earlam and Rob Winnington were the only Mid Cheshire pairing.

In their first game Earlam and Winnington beat Jade Beresford and Liam Gregson 21-13.

Their last 16 match saw them win 21-13 against Sue Gawne and Andy Kernish.

The quarter-final was a much tougher game but Earlam and Winnington just made it home 21-19 against Laura Hallworth and Jarod Hamer.

In the semi-finals, saw Clair Russell and Steve Clamp overcame Kerry Brown and James Thomas 21-10.

Earlam and Winnington defeated Mags Swift and Robert Swift 21-17 to book their place in the final, which went the way of North Lancs and Fylde pair Russell and Clamp 21-9.

Meanwhile, 32 pairs played in the Castle Sports Open Pairs on Saturday played over two greens.

There were a lot of Mid Cheshire pairings on the day. In the end, two brothers from Crewe, Steve and Sean Morrey, took the title.
