WEAVER Valley Cycling Club’s Guardian Cup 10-mile time trial competition came to a close with 20 members and 63 guests having competed over 11 scoring rounds, all held on Wednesday nights starting from Lach Dennis.

Riders completed a challenging 10-mile course around Allostock and Lower Peover, attempting to improve their personal best and establish ranking points during the race series.

Riders were allowed to compete on aerodynamic time-trial bikes, designed for maximum speed, or on their road bikes. Seb Grindley, an 18-year-old professional rider who turned up to ride the course as a guest, recorded a remarkable time of 20.03.

This was the fastest time of the year and also a course record.

Since the ride Seb has been in the international headlines, having just recently come second in the World Championships Junior Road Race.

The fastest time in the road bike category was posted by Mike Chadwick in 21.02. The Guardian Cup itself, based on a handicap system, was won by David Vincent for the second time running, with 140 points, with Sam Taylor in second on 137 points and Andrew Mallagh third with 135 points.

Taylor won the Gregory club scratch TT competition, with 150 points, with Vincent in second and Mallagh third with 135 points.

Mallagh won the John Horsfield Road Bike Trophy for the second year running, with 148 points, with Geoff Lovelady and David Cope joint second on 141 points.

Veteran rider Lovelady was the most consistent rider, competing in all 11 rounds, and producing an excellent age related PB of 29.10.

The club's time triallers also competed in the Club Championship 10-mile competition during the summer, with Taylor taking the win in 21.19, Lloyd Smith silver with 22.02 and Craig Lee bronze in 24.26.
