MATHEW Welding scored the decisive penalty as Barnton progressed to the second round of the Macron Cup at Runcorn Town’s expense following a shoot-out.
Full-time ended at 1-1, with Barnton down to nine men and Runcorn 10, but The Villagers were on the money as they aced all five of their penalty attempts.
Ryan Gibson, Matthew Williams, Joe Haley and Cameron Hargreaves all hit the mark and then, after home keeper Ryan Bopda saved Niall Holmes’ attempt for Runcorn, Welding made no mistake about sending his side through 5-3 on penalties.
Jamie Apperley, the scorer of Runcorn’s third penalty, put the visitors in front after 13 minutes but Joseph Levey equalised on 82 minutes before being sent off eight minutes later for his alleged part in a scuffle that also resulted in teammate Lee Turkington and Town’s John Osifo being shown red cards.
