SANDIWAY Golf Club’s Liam Gobin reached the quarter-finals of the English Amateur Championship.

From a field of 204 of the country’s best amateur players, the 22-year-old's journey ended in the final eight.

Frazer Jones from Kirkby Muxloe was the man who dented Gobin’s hopes at Hartlepool’s Seaton Carew Golf Club, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year and is the 10th oldest golf club in England.

Jones sprinted into a 3-up lead in seven holes against the former Sir John Deane's Sixth Form College student, thanks to a 35-footer for birdie on the par-three third.

Another two came on the sixth as he slotted one from nine feet and despite Gobin trying to chip away at his lead, Jones made a remarkable recovery for par on the 14th having hit one near the dunes to win the hole.

3-up on the 16th and having hit the green in two, it looked like the match was over as Gobin needed to make a difficult up-and-down short-sided over a bunker.

But the Sandiway man duly obliged while Jones three-putted to keep the game going.

Jones bogeyed the 17th as things got tense but pars apiece on the last hole ensured the Kirkby Muxloe man made it through to the semi-finals with a 1-up win.
