A MUAY Thai boxer was victorious in his ‘biggest fight yet’.

Middlewich resident Owen Edwards came out on top as he competed in the MTM Super Series in Liverpool.

Only his third-ever bout, Owen hopes his performance can help propel him to the next level.

“Fighting is my absolute favourite thing in the world and being on such a big show and being so high up on the card means a lot for me and my future in the sport,” Owen said.

“I really believe that I can go far.

Owen, 19, trains at Evade Cheshire Martial Arts on Nantwich Road, Middlewich.

When he first started competing, Owen weighed 18 stone and was told he would struggle to find many fights at that weight.

Since then, he has managed to drop down to 12 stone and is hoping to cut more weight as he eyes three more fights this year.

Owen said: “Training for this fight was the hardest it’s ever been. I put so much into it to make sure I was as prepared as I could be.

“This camp was extremely difficult but there was no point where I thought about quitting. I always knew I’d fight and that I’d keep moving forward and get the win.

“I knew I had to push forward not just for myself but for my family, my gym and my coach and I had to represent my town.”

He added: “I wanted to prove that even being from a small town in Cheshire I can go far and I can win.

“That’s something I want to continue to do and hopefully win a few belts to bring back home to show that no matter where you come from or where you start you can do amazing things."

Owen’s fight at the MTM Super Series saw him best an Italian fighter several years older than himself via a split decision.

“Having slightly more experience than Owen and being a big, strong opponent we knew we had our work cut out for us,” said Evade’s founder, Martin McDonnell.

“His game plan was to be very aggressive and box with Owen.

“However, we had Owen score with kicks and then close him down and control him in the clinch. Owen had a distinct advantage in the clinch - scoring well with powerful knees, gaining better positional control and really wearing his opponent out.”

Martin added: “As one of the smaller clubs on show we were relatively unknown but Owen’s performance earned him some fans and kind words from the promoters and other fighters - he's really building a solid reputation for himself and the club.”
