WINNINGTON Park endured a tough day in a 39-10 defeat at Vale of Lune.
They started strongly and did produce some good rugby, but it was not enough on the day against a side three places above them in Regional 2 North West.
Due to a few injuries it was a reshuffled Park side, with Richard Hart returning from injury in his second game for the club.
Some early indiscretions from the home side allowed Park to get on the front foot.
When Tom King spun through a tackle he looked likely to score but indiscipline by VoL with a high tackle gave Benny Elliot an easy penalty shot for 3-0.
From the restart, Park again attacked VoL with good phases of play and a neat chip kick and regather by Elliot led to the supporting King touching down and the added conversion extended the advantage to 10-0 after seven minutes.
But it was the last points that Winnington scored despite looking likely to add more until the 23rd minute mark.
That was when a penalty at a maul from a lineout was taken quickly by VoL and King tackled the player before retreating 10 metres which resulted in him being shown the yellow card.
VoL seemed to get the bit between their teeth at this point and a second penalty success cut the deficit to four points.
As the rain started and handling errors crept in, the tide turned.
VoL crossed for two converted tries in quick succession to establish a 20-10 interval lead.
In worsening conditions VoL deployed more of their kicking game to pin Park back into their own half in the second period.
Then a cross-field kick led to a third home try in the 48th minute.
VoL indiscipline on 65 minutes for another high tackle put them down to 14 players for 10 minutes after a great run by Elliot but they did not capitalise on this advantage.
The hosts finished the stronger team and they added their bonus-point try on 75 minutes and their final touchdown four minutes later.
