STEVEN Morrey came through the field on Saturday night at Rudheath Sports & Social Club to claim his second Rudheath Spring Open title.
In the final, Morrey raced into a 13-6 lead against Greg Smith, before Smith launched a comeback and the final was finely poised at 19-17 to Morrey.
Unfazed by the Smith comeback, Morrey held his nerve to get over the line 21-18 and with it claim the £800 first prize.
The Mid Cheshire Federation team recorded a thumping 23-9 victory over Preston on Sunday, and they now top the Division Three table in their quest to win promotion this season.
The selection of Alsager as their home venue was an inspired choice as they only dropped one shot in the 12 games.
Ex-Alsager player Mark Ball led the team out with a 21-6 win.
Other single-figure victories came via Andy Booth 21-4, Bill Danford and Darren Beardmore 21-9.
In the away leg in Preston, the Mid Cheshire team had six out of the 12 winners with the Comberbach players Colin Peters, James Eaton and Andy Gregory all winning their games.
This Sunday sees the turn of the Mid Cheshire women's county team to play their first game of the 2023 campaign against North Derbyshire.
The team have chosen Kingswood as the home venue with Nicola Boulton, the county's most prolific competition winner, chosen to start off proceedings at game 1. The away team travel to New Mills Cricket & Bowling Club. Both games start at 2pm.
The second round of Cheshire County’s Brunner Cup takes place on Saturday.
The local teams looking to progress to the quarter finals are Castle Sports B, who take on Metro Sports at Packhorse BC; Davenham Rec, who face last year’s winners Lloyds Hotel at Parkside BC; Barnton CC who play Manor Road at Upton-by-Chester BC; Owley Wood who come up against Houldsworth WMC at Wilmslow Cons; Wharton Cons who play Crewe PO at Congleton CC and Castle Sports A who are pitted against Packhorse at Swetenham BC. All games will start at 2pm.
The semi final line up for the Mid Cheshire League's Littler Cup was decided on Saturday afternoon. Comberbach B will play Rudheath A and Middlewich RBL will play Crewe PO with the ties due to take place this Sunday.
