WINNINGTON Park women’s hockey team are still one win away from winning their league but certainly have one hand on the trophy.
They went into last Saturday’s game at home to Runcorn hoping that a win plus results elsewhere would hand them the title.
Even though they won 7-0 to remain undefeated, the victory by second-placed Clwb Hoci Eirias means they can still mathematically draw level if they win their remaining games and Park lose all theirs. But even then, Park’s goal difference is currently far superior.
The women will go into this weekend knowing that a victory at Liverpool will guarantee them the title with four games to go.
Park controlled the first half against Runcorn, scoring two within the opening 10 minutes through Liz Miller from a short corner and Helen Fowler from open play.
They went on to score five more before half time, with Jaz Barlow collecting a hat-trick, Fowler netting a second and Nic Hall also hitting the mark – all from open play.
Park put in a professional second half performance, creating chances, but did not add to the score.
Winnington seconds won 9-1 at Whitchurch and remain within one point of the top spot.
Em Taylor scored four goals, with others being contributed by Charlotte Holt, two, Eileen Miller, Izzy Robinson, Jade Nield.
Park’s men made if five games unbeaten with a 2-2 draw in a scrappy affair at Golborne.
Park went 2-0 up in the first half through good counter attacking goals started from a Dan Hilton aerial both finished by Greg Wilkes.
Golborne clawed back two goals, possibly due to Park hot having any subs after captain Corless went off injured.
The thirds were away to Alderley Edge and achieved a big win.
Tony Taig grabbed the first goal, then Ollie Curry turned goal scorer from provider to make it 2-1.
From there on it was all Park pushing Alderley back.
Matty Entwistle got the next goal before half-time from a penalty flick.
The second half was more of the same with some great moves and flowing hockey.
Mark Whalley spread the ball all over the pitch. Matt Morley and Rob Doel kept it strong in the middle. Ben Armstrong and Ben Cowhig moved the ball down the wings.
Ben Fisher scored a second-half double, with Dom Evanson and Taig completing the scoring.
