AN organiser of a Northwich walking football club is appealing for new members to come and give it a go.

Steve Ellis, from Kingsmead, organises 1874 Northwich Walking Football Club which he says 'makes him feel young again'.

The club, which has members aged between their mid-50s to their late 70s, was set up seven years ago with just 10 football enthusiasts on the books to begin with.

Now with around 70 members, the club, which aims to help the over 50s get back into football and increase their physical activity, is looking to welcome new teammates.

“We’re a big club I’d say in terms of Cheshire," Steve said.

“It’s great to be outdoors, it’s like being a kid again. You’re out playing football with a truly great bunch of guys.

“When I retired more than eight years ago and I was looking for things to do, walking football seemed to fit the bill.

"I have never once regretted it and it’s been great."

The club has close to 40 turn up on a Wednesday morning and half that on a Friday afternoon.

There is little contact in walking football and, as you might imagine, there is no running involved.

There is also no heading of the ball and play is restarted with kick-ins instead of throw-ins.

The club plays outside at Moss Farm, which Steve, 69, described as having superb facilities.

“It’s the social side that is a fundamental part of it,” Steve, who volunteers at Tatton Park, added.

“Anyone that comes along will receive a warm welcome.”
