WITTON Albion host BetVictor Northern Premier League second-placed Hyde United at Wincham Park tonight, kick-off 7.45pm.
The Tigers arrive on a four-match unbeaten run to present a fresh challenge to Carl Macauley's men, whose draw at Scarborough on Saturday added a point to the win at home against Mickleover Sports and the previous tied encounter at Whitby Town on the opening day of the new season.
Neither Witton Albion or Scarborough Athletic had scored more than one goal per game so far this year, so it would have surprised few that Saturday’s BetVictor Northern Premier League meeting at Flamingo Land Stadium finished 0-0.
Dual registration AFC Fylde man Jack Byrne made his full debut at right-back, with Cesaire Lingouba switching to midfield at the expense of James Murray.
Carl Macauley’s side, on the east coast for the second time in as many weeks, counted their luck when saved by the woodwork twice in the opening 45 minutes.
Goalkeeper Chris Renshaw pulled off two terrific stops at the back end of the first half too, ensuring Witton had the wind in their favour in the second half while on level terms.
Witton changed to 5-4-1 after the break, with Liam Goulding becoming a third centre half.
They looked better for the new formation and could have snatched all three points in the third minute of added time.
Murray spotted and crossed for Danny McKenna haring through the middle but in trying to settle the ball on his favoured foot Will Annan was able to enough to cancel out a worthwhile shot.
Albion: Renshaw; Byrne, Short, Wardle, Anson, Goulding, McKenna, Smart, Hawley (Murray h/t), Jones, Lingouba. Subs not used: Sorensen, O’Hare, Hassan, Neild.
Meanwhile, Witton have been drawn away to Newcastle Town in the first round of the Integro Sport League Cup on Tuesday, September 17, kick-off 7.45pm.
* LOSTOCK Gralam left it very late to complete a comeback win at Egerton in the Cheshire League Premier Division, leaving them ninth after seven matches.
The Knutsford side took a 10th minute lead, Liam Collins levelled matters after 50 minutes and Scott Twite fired home the winner three minutes into added time.
* NORTHWICH Vixens made their debut in the Women's FA Cup on Sunday, beating Bury FC Women 13-2 in what was their first game of the season.
They have been drawn away to Nottingham side Arnold Eagles at Calverton Miners Welfare club in the first qualifying round on September 22.
They play their first league match of the season at Warrington Wolverines on Wednesday.
* HOW'S your kit design skills?
1874 Northwich are inviting football fans to suggest a fresh design to be worn in the 2020-21 season, when the home kit is due for renewal.
Club officials say there is no template and no deadline, just that the primary colours should be green and black.
"We are openly inviting supporters, football fans worldwide and the kit concept community to come up with a design for our green home kit that is due for renewal in the summer, with a view that a favourite will be manufactured ready for season 2020-21," says a statement from the club's twitter account.
Public submissions of designs will be accepted, or designs can be emailed to fanengagement@1874northwich.com.
* NORTHWICH Victoria have announced new dates for rescheduled fixtures, coming on the back of FA Cup involvement.
Squires Gate v Vics will take place on Tuesday, September 10, 7.45pm, while Steve Wilkes' side will host Irlam on Wednesday, September 25, 7.45pm.
The meeting with Rylands at Gorsey Lane needs to be rearranged as the current date clashes with the Warrington side's involvement in the FA Vase second qualifying round.
