Match of the Day
Widnes v Northwich Victoria (at Barnton, ko 3pm)
Northwich Victoria perhaps didn’t envisage returning to Townfield so soon after the end of a tenancy agreement with the Villagers.
Widnes, for now at least, will be ground-sharing with Barnton while they wait for a new playing surface to be laid at the Select Security Stadium following the conclusion of the current Super League campaign.
Their promotion to the Northern Premier League at the end of last term makes them one of the highest-ranked opponents that Steve Wilkes’ side could have been drawn against.
The victors will play either Burscough or 1874 Northwich at the next stage later this month.
It’s an important afternoon for…
Middlewich Town
The Witches have enjoyed an encouraging start to a new season back in the Cheshire League’s top-flight, collecting four points from two matches this week.
There will be some frustration they let slip a two-goal interval lead when Crewe visited on Wednesday, an exciting encounter ending level at 3-3.
FC St Helens Town lost at home to Billinge the same evening, but did record a 3-0 victory at home to Malpas on the opening day.
And what about…
Winsford United v Irlam (ko 3pm)
Blues have been in front during both of the North West Counties League matches they played this week, only to be pegged back each time.
Lee Duckworth’s men hope to make it third time lucky when they turn their attention to the FA Cup and an extra preliminary round encounter with Premier Division rivals Irlam.
Why not go and give your local side a cheer?
