Winnington Park 37 Glossop 17
AFTER three successive wins, this is Winnington’s best start to a season since 2011.
They had Saturday’s game against Glossop under control during spells either side of the interval when they scored a third and fourth try of the contest, banking a bonus point and establishing a 19-point lead.
If they beat Manchester Medics this weekend, the men from Burrows Hill will have made their most successful opening to a campaign in almost a decade.
They were bright from the outset in their latest outing, taking the lead when Shaun Underdown crashed over the line following several phases of approach play.
Jack Williams converted, adding a penalty from in front of the posts shortly afterwards.
Glossop replied when Kit Brammer’s pass was timed perfectly for Jake Gibson to touch down.
Tom Dearneley added the extras, sending over a three-pointer to restore parity when he kicked next.
Park’s most productive period followed, Craig Lamb claiming an opportunist try after the visitors’ had failed to claim a clearance kick.
They moved further ahead when Danny Williams gathered a loose pass when Glossop attempted to run the ball out of their own 22, stepping away from attempted tackles to send in skipper Harry Stubbs for the hosts’ third try of the half.
Jack Williams’ conversion made it 22-10.
The gap between the teams on the scoreboard grew wider when Stubbs charged through the away team’s defence during the early exchanges after half time, providing a pass for Joe Robins to score under the posts.
Williams was again reliable with the resulting conversion.
Winnington’s scrum continued to dominate, and a fifth try arrived when Tom Witter evaded his marker’s challenge before slipping a pass inside for replacement Tom Bannister to score with his first touch.
James Johnson’s penalty made it 37-10 before Glossop reduced their final arrears with a penalty try prompted by a misdemeanour that led to Park full back James Moran spending time in the sin bin.
