His 24-goals haul attracted the attention of Albion boss Paul Ogden, who plans to use Smith in tandem with Andy Kinsey up front.
And he settled in swiftly, scoring half Witton’s goals in their opening six summer friendlies.
The front-runner has also had spells with Leek Town and Newcastle Town.
