A SLOVAKIAN man living in Nantwich has been jailed following a head-on crash, which killed a 26-year-old woman earlier this year.
Jan Mercak, 25, of The Pinfold in Poole, was sentenced to two and half years at Chester Crown Court last Tuesday after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
The incident occurred on the A530 Nantwich Road in Stanthorne, near Middlewich, early on Saturday, May 2.
At 5.25am, Mercak’s blue Volvo lorry collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa, which was being driven by Czech-born Veronika Behounova, from Nantwich.
She was taken to hospital with serious head and spinal injuries when her condition was described as critical but stable.
However, she died 11 days later on Wednesday, May 13.
Mercak, who was also given a four year driving ban, was refused bail when he appeared at South Cheshire Magistrates Court in Crewe.
The 25-year-old lorry driver has been in Britain since March last year and worked at Delphic International Ltd in Poole.
