A LAST minute panic over the digital switchover has led to a surge in television sales, say local retailers.

More than three million homes in the north west must re-tune to digital equipment as the analogue signal is being switched off.

Andrew Lyons, manager of Spatial, formally Nordis, of Chesterway, Northwich, said: “It’s been manic.

“We have been very busy.

“Lots of people have left it to the last minute to treat themselves to a new TV.”

Some elderly customers, he said, have returned 30-year-old TVs, complete with their original receipts.

“They have been surprised to discover that for exactly the same price or less, today’s televisions are a lot more technical. They have brighter, clearer pictures and save energy.”

He said his business, established 30 years ago, has seen sales soar by between 30 and 40 per cent.

Mr Lyons added: “It has been a blessing in this recession and come at exactly the right time.

“We have given all our customers an easy re-tune sheet with simple instructions.

“If they struggle we can help them.

“We are employing extra staff on re-tune day.”

Customers installing Freeview who live in the Granada region will be able to receive a vast array of new digital channels as well as the traditional ones.

Celebrity Keith Chegwin has teamed up with Freeview to help viewers make an easy transition.

He said: “It’s important people understand that converting your whole house doesn’t have to be costly or complicated with Freeview plus.

“There are no monthly bills involved and it’s easy to set up. Just plug in and enjoy recording the telly you love at the touch of a button.”

Residents are reminded that they need to upgrade all their televisions.

Don’t forget portable sets in the bedroom and kitchen.

A Freeview box can cost as little as £20 so you don’t have to worry about monthly subscriptions.

Video recorders will need replacing after the switchover if you want to be able to watch one channel and record another.

You shouldn’t need a new aerial if you’re receiving a good picture now.

You don’t need to buy a new TV. Virtually all existing televisions can be converted to digital with a set-top box.

You will need to retune at both stages of switchover, today and on Wednesday, December 2.
