WARM tributes have been paid to a much-loved former Northwich head teacher.
Amy O’Neill, aged 93, inspired generations of children as headmistress of Whitegate CE Primary School for almost 30 years.
Former pupil, Dave Jones, aged 61, of Rushton Drive, Middlewich, said: “Many children owe where they are in life to the start Mrs O’Neill gave them.
“She was the stalwart of the school. She was brilliant, bubbly, enthusiastic and a lovely lady.”
He said she knew every pupil by name and encouraged each child to develop to their full potential.
She used to organise evening football matches against Winsford Junior School.
“She was a kindly, well-respected person in the village.”
His cousin, Ann White, aged 45, who now lives in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, said: “She was like our big mum.
“She was absolutely brilliant and was always there for you.
“She was lovely with the children and made us all feel part of her family.”
She fondly remembers devoted Mrs O’Neill giving up hours of her own time arranging activities and events, including the annual nativity play.
“In our last year, she made a special classroom for 10 of us called the ‘Big Girls’ Room’ and put us in charge of looking after the little ones.
“She gave us so much confidence, and, without us knowing it, was preparing us for the future.
“She was a great guide to so many children and steered us all in the right direction.”
Mrs O’Neill retired in 1977.
Wife of the late Alec, she was a much-loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She died on October 23 at Chirnside House, Lancaster.
Her funeral was held on Friday, near her former home in Ullapool, Scotland.
