A COMMUNITY centre in Crewe has received a makeover thanks to a team of youngsters on the Prince’s Trust personal development programme.

The face-list is also down to a partnership of organisations who are involved in regenerating the area.

The team of 17 to 23-year-olds from the Cheshire Prince's Trust Team 28 took on the challenge to spruce up The Bungalow on Sherborne Road.

The premises are used for a diverse range of activities including pensioners' clubs, exercise classes, youth clubs and toddler groups.

The three-week project included the installation of a new kitchen and bathroom, replastering work, garden landscaping and decoration, to reinvigorate the well used community facility.

The Bungalow is provided by local housing provider Wulvern who are currently transforming the estate with a £4.5 million regeneration project including the creation of new affordable homes and public places.

Keble Heath Construction Limited and BGC Gas Services Limited provided materials, expertise and work placements for the team.

Prince’s Trust leader Isobel Sykes was instrumental in organising the team. She said: “These youngsters hit it off from the start and worked exceptionally well. "It’s been hard work but fun too. We are all very pleased with the results.”

Jan Melia, Wulvern’s regeneration officer commented: “It has been a very enjoyable and emotional project – seeing both the centre and the team blossom. "The residents of the Sherborne Estate have a community facility they can be proud of.”

Team member Samantha Manley said the experience has boosted her confidence and helped her make some good friends.

She said: “I’ve never done anything before that’s made me want to get out of bed in the morning. "The programme has given me the opportunity to learn new skills which will help me in my job search.”

The team members were joined by their families, partner organisations and representatives of those groups who use the facility to celebrate the grand opening.
