A NEGLECTED footpath along the banks of the River Wheelock in Middlewich has been given a £7,500 revamp.
The trail which runs from the Chester Road at Stanthorne Bridge to the canal towpath has been resurfaced allowing access for walkers all year round.
Previously the path had suffered from poor drainage and frequent flooding from the river which made it muddy for walkers in winter months.
Middlewich councillors and residents brought the matter to the attention to Cheshire East Council’s public rights of way team.
The footpath has now been resurfaced with a raised stone base to prevent flooding.
Clr Mike Parsons, of Middlewich Town Council, said: “It was pretty impassable before now it’s idyllic.”
The footpath forms part of Croxton Trail Park, which was formally a landfill site that was transformed into a riverside leisure facility and wildlife haven in 2004.
Clr Parsons added: “It’s interesting because it’s only a short path and considering you’re just running away from the A54, it’s so tranquil.
“They’ve done such a good job. It’s a peaceful haven in the middle of a busy area.”
The improved trail also links to other footpaths where walkers can follow the River Wheelock and the River Dane and see the meeting of the waters at the confluence of the two rivers.
Clr Andrew Knowles, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, said: “It is wonderful news that the improvements have been made to the footpath in Middlewich.
“Croxton Trail Park is a marvellous asset to Cheshire East. It is not only a wonderful environmental initiative but it also gives people the chance to exercise in a peaceful, safe and most importantly mud free environment.”
