HALLOWE’EN is upon us and one Northwich resident has grown a prize pumpkin.

Adam Boyd, 10, was given seeds at Victoria Road Primary School in a yoghurt pot to take home and grow.

However he did not know that they pumpkin would grow to an impressive 48 inches.

The budding grower nurtured the potential jack-o’-lantern at his grandmother’s house, in Leftwich.

Nancy Turner, 75, said: “It will make a very good lantern for Halloween,” But when asked if it could be used for pumpkin soup, she added: “I don’t think so.”

Youngsters elsewhere in Northwich have also been enjoying the run-up to Halloween with a pumpkin keeping children amused at Charles Darwin Primary School.

The enormous Hallowe’en squash was donated to the Castle school’s reception pupils by Peter Dykes, from Castle, who grew it on his allotment, in Queensgate.

It took three men to lift the pumpkin, which was then hollowed out by the children and made into a feast of pumpkin soup.
