A WINSFORD support group for parents has been given £100 to help create a community garden.

The Parents of Wharton group plans to develop an area where families can grow flowers with their children and promote healthy eating by growing their own vegetables.

Parent Emma Newton, of Severn Walk, is involved in the project. She said: “We want the garden to be a place that helps to bring parents and young children in the local community closer together.

“Using the garden to promote healthy eating is also really important. A lot of children in the community do not eat healthily and become overweight very young so we want to educate children and parents about growing their own vegetables to eat.”

Weaver Vale Housing Trust donated £100 through its Community Assistance Fund, which will be used for plants, seeds and a supporting trellis for the garden in front of the Children’s Centre in Wharton.

Georgia Winstanley, resident involvement support officer for the trust, said: “Promoting a healthier lifestyle and outdoor activity is really important and the Trust is delighted to support this fantastic project run by Parents of Wharton.

“The group provides invaluable support for a lot of our customers with young children in the local area so it’s great to give something back to them to reward the great work they do.”
