MEMBERS of the campaign for a Crewe town council have met with Phil Woolas MP, minister for the North West, to discuss the future of local government in the town.

Steve Hogben and Steven Roberts, of the One Town – One Voice campaign, met with Mr Woolas, who is responsible for regional affairs in the North West.

Mr Roberts said: “We had a good meeting with the minister, who was very sympathetic to the need for the people of Crewe to have a strong voice of their own.

"He said that he would examine the process adopted by Cheshire East Council and I am sure that his help would be much appreciated.”

Campaigners said the Cheshire East consultation consisted of a 'flawed and confusing' ballot and a request to a whole host of stakeholders for their views.

Mr Roberts added: “After making a hash of the first stage consultation we had hoped that Cheshire East Council would make a better job of this second stage.

"Following the inconclusive result of the first, we feel that this consultation should have been on the simple choice of having a Crewe Town Council or not.

"Cheshire East Council have decided however that the second stage of the public consultation will go ahead based on a proposal that there is no town council.”

Steve Hogben added: “I would urge all residents of Crewe to write directly to Cheshire East Council requesting a single town council for Crewe.”
