A PRISONER has been left with wires sticking out of his hand because he has not been allowed to go to hospital for an operation.
Weaverham man Danny Pritchard had a metal plate put in his right hand in August after he broke his little finger and two knuckles.
The 28-year-old was due to return to Leighton Hospital to have the pins removed on September 28 but in the meantime was sent to HM Prison Altcourse, in Liverpool, for breaching his probation.
His mum Pauline said so far he has not been allowed to go to hospital for the operation.
“I know he’s done wrong breaking his probation but it doesn’t matter where or who you are, everyone’s got rights,” she said.
She said the wires originally had tabs covering their sharp ends but these have long since come off.
“He’s in terrible pain,” she said.
”When he sleeps at night, he gets scratches all over him.
“I’ve been in touch with the consultant who did the operation and his secretary said that if there’s wires sticking out infection could set in.
“We don’t know how his hand is going to heal anyway and whether he will have full use of it – but now what if he loses it?”
She added: “These wires are a weapon too – they take everything sharp off you in prison but he’s got these wires.”
Pauline said both she and Danny had complained to prison staff but feel like they are not getting anywhere.
Their solicitor, Chris Johnson, has written a letter to the prison governor about the issue and Pauline has also asked Danny’s surgeon to write explaining the situation.”
