A FESTIVE fitness event in Nantwich has been welcomed by council bosses.
The Santa Dash will take place on Sunday December 20 at 10am and Councillor Andrew Knowles is encouraging families to take part in the charity fun run to help shed some extra festive pounds.
Organised by Sandbach charity Railway Children, with support from Cheshire East Council, all participants will wear santa suits when they complete a 2.5K fun run or 5K race around Nantwich town centre.
Everyone will be presented with a medal at the end of the dash and prizes are available for winners.
Clr Knowles said: “This is a great way to spread Christmas cheer – and keep fit at the same time. Everyone worries about putting on weight over the festive season, but training for this event will help people across South Cheshire to keep trim.
“It’s important for everyone to be happy and healthy over the winter season – and the council is pleased to be supporting this event.”
Kaye Brindle from Railway Children, added: “Santas of all shapes and sizes are taking part – from grandparents to tiny tots.
"In the run up to Christmas it’s a lovely time for families to enjoy a day out together.”
The event in Nantwich Town Square also includes a performance by X-Factor’s Marie-Claire Scott, brass-band entertainment, face-painting, ice-skating at The Residence, mulled wine and mince pie refreshments and guest appearances.
All the proceeds will help fund Railway Children’s work to protect children and young people living on the streets.
Kaye explained: “The Santa run fee will cover the cost of putting on the event and then each ‘santa’ will be asked to raise £20 sponsorship.
"This money will improve the lives of vulnerable children by providing food, clothing, education, counselling and a safe place to stay.”

Children under 10 can take part in the ‘dash’ free of charge and are invited to dress up in Christmas-themed outfits.
There is a running fee of £15 for adults and £12.50 for youngsters aged 10 and over, and this includes a free santa suit, sports goody bag and medal.
