A CHARITY ball staged at Nantwich Civic Hall has given another major boost to the charitable causes being championed by Cheshire East Mayor Margaret Simon.
Leading councillors and members of the public twirled the night away during an evening of music and dance to raise cash for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and Action Duchenne, a charity supporting research into Muscular Dystrophy.
Guests including Crewe and Nantwich MP Edward Timpson were greeted by a champagne reception before enjoying a three-course dinner and entertainment from the Swing Duet, a local duo, and the Junior Parker and the House Rockers, a six piece set up specialising in 60s music.
It was the first Mayor's Charity Ball since Cheshire East Council was formed in April and local people and businesses showed their support by buying tickets and offering prizes for a charity auction.
During her welcome speech the Mayor paid tribute to the achievements of Cheshire East Council during the first few months of its existence.
In that time the council has been instrumental in bringing forward several major projects including the £21m state-of-the-art Sir William Stanier School at Crewe and new housing schemes to help people over 60 live independently.
The event raised more than £1,600 bringing the total raised for the charities to date to a grand £5,554.
Moneyspinners have included a coffee morning at Crewe's Municipal Buildings, a summer fishing match and council dress down day.
Councillor Simon said: “As I go about Cheshire East, I am continually heartened by the response of local people to these charities.
"Even when the chips are down and most people are forced to tighten their belts, they can always find a bit of spare cash to contribute.
“The ball was not only a successful fundraiser, but a very special and memorable evening.”
