Rory Delap’s dismissal will look to some like a disaster, but it could make the Potters a better football team.
Why? Liam Lawrence did not start today’s match to accommodate Rory and his rockets.
A three match ban for Delap will give Lawrence the chance to add some proper balance to the side.
On Stoke’s left flank the combination of Matthew Etherington with a proper attacking full back, Danny Pugh caused Manchester City a lot of problems and worked well as a defensive combination.
Now I have nothing against Delap’s contribution to the team, his dedication to the cause or his spirit.
But I do think that Lawrence offers more as creative force and for a team that needs to win matches to stay up, that could prove vital.
And while we had several chances from Rory’s throw ins on Saturday, we sometimes rely too heavily on them.
Let’s use the players we have to greater creative effect. Bring on Sunderland!
