Michael Welch
Date of birth:Age: 26
Signed: July 2007 from Accrington Stanley
Contract: Until May 2009
Previous clubs: Macclesfield Town, Barnsley
Skipper Welch was one of the few shrewd signings made by Neil Redfearn during his brief tenure as Vics’ boss last season.
Struggled for fitness and form before Dino Maamria’s appointment in September 2007 but became one of the side’s most consistent and reliable performers after that.
A no-nonsense defender who is strong both in the air and the tackle, Welch is a firm fan favourite.
Spent two seasons at Accrington Stanley before his switch to Cheshire, racking up more than 60 appearances.
Before that he starred for Macclesfield Town, scoring five times in 118 first team games.
