ANCIENT woodlands are going under the hammer.
Winnington Wood will be sold at auction later this week.
Approximately 22.02 acres in size, the land in Lostock Gralam has a guide price of £150,000.
This includes a block of deciduous woodland with river frontage.
The land, located just off the A556, was on the proposed path of phase 2B of the HS2 railway scheme, however, this has now been cancelled.
A section of the eastern end of the wood still remains under safeguarding.
The listing reads: “Winnington Wood comprises an attractive and extensive block of deciduous ancient woodland with frontage to Wincham Brook along its whole northern boundary.
“The Woodland benefits from a mixture of open areas and more densely wooded areas, with a good range of tree species including English Oak, beech, sycamore, horse chestnut, rowan, holy, silver birch and hazel, amongst others.
“A track runs through the middle of the wood proving useful vehicle access directly off the main road.”
Winnington Wood is one of nine lots up for sale at Halls auctioneers’ final collective property and land auction of the year.
Several churches, homes and a field are also going under the hammer.
The auction takes place at 3pm this Friday, November 29, at the company's headquarters in Shrewsbury, SY4 3DR.
