A SHOPPING centre’s new roof is coming along nicely.

The first stage of works to replace and refurbish the roof at Winsford Cross has been completed.

Assuming there are no unexpected hiccups, the project should be completed by the end of the year.

Cllr Nathan Pardoe, cabinet member for inclusive economy, regeneration and digital transformation, said: “The Winsford Cross roof replacement works are more than halfway complete.

“It’s been great to hear shoppers say that the works have made Winsford Town Centre look better – they are another example of Cheshire West and Chester Council’s commitment to regenerating Winsford Town Centre.”

On what work is left, Cllr Pardoe added: “Work will continue to the central atrium, the second long section towards B&M and additional sections of the flat roof areas.

“Weather permitting, the roof replacement works are due to complete by the end of 2024.”

Work got underway at the end of August.

The project will see the main ‘barrel’ roof replaced with a flatter, curved clear roof.

Meanwhile, the central atrium roof will be refurbished and the external canopy at the Jubilee Way entrance will be removed as part of the works.

Interior columns will also be painted, and the flat roofs of shops will also be renewed.

In total, the works will cost around £1 million.

Speaking earlier this year, Cllr Pardoe said: “It’s great news the shopping centre roof is being replaced.

“It’s been an eyesore for years and is another example of the maintenance backlog built up by the former private owners that Cheshire West and Chester Council has stepped up to fix.

“When the works are complete, the roof will be watertight and the buckets will be banished – as promised!”
