Three new courts dedicated to a fast-growing racquet sport could be built on a camping site in Cheshire.
Plans have been submitted by Lady Heyes Camping and Caravan site on Kingsley Road for three padel courts each measuring 10m x 20m, built with a synthetic turf play surface surrounded by glass and mesh panels.
Padel, also called padel tennis, is a racquet sport usually played in doubles on an enclosed court. The style of play has been compared to a cross between tennis and squash, where the ball can bounce off the court's glass wall or surrounding metallic mesh.
Padel was founded in Mexico and is considered one of the world's fastest growing sports.
A planning statement submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council in support of the application, said: "The existing use of the land is for an outdoor recreation use as part of the wider caravan and camping site.
“The proposed use is similarly for an outdoor recreational use. There is therefore no change of use of land involved. No buildings are proposed.
"Planning permission is only therefore required for the engineering operations involved in constructing the padel courts.”
The proposal also includes the provision of 10 car parking spaces for visitors.
The site lies within the Green Belt, which is protected land designed to protect the countryside from urban encroachment.
The statement concludes: "The engineering operations are required for the outdoor recreation use. The proposals preserve the openness of the Green Belt and do not harm Green Belt purposes.”
No date has been set for a decision and the plans can be viewed on the coucnil’s planning portal under the following reference number: 24/02694/FUL.
