The search is underway for new Shopmobility premises in Northwich after the closure of its former branch left users fearing for their independence.

The service rented equipment such as mobility scooters, wheelchairs and walking frames to people who might otherwise be unable to get around the town to shop, see friends or attend appointments.

It was run by the Dial West Cheshire charity, which announced at the end of September its Northwich branch at Weaver Square was closing. The service had been based at the council's information centre building which closed as part of a wider redevelopment of Weaver Square.

A Northwich resident, who did not wish to be named, contacted the Guardian and said: "So many older people rely on this service to shop, visit doctors, attend the Victoria hospital, and in some cases, at least have other human contact.

"Many younger people also rely on this vital service.

“I understand, in this day of funding deficits for local authorities, balancing the books cannot be easy.  However, not all people have the technology or capability to shop online. There is an important social need to ensure disabled people retain independence and feel worthwhile."

She added: “We often hear that shoppers need to buy from their local retail businesses and that the 'grey pound' can still contribute to the local economy.

"But people need to be able to make purchases in the first place. Some will say, 'we have a bus service - use that'.  However, not all disabled people can access this transport. What are we supposed to do - vegetate, give up? Why should we?"

A council spokeswoman said it was working with Dial West Cheshire to deliver a Shopmobility service again in the Northwich area.

She said: “Due to the scheduled closure of the information centre, the council has been trying to source a location which is accessible to meet the needs of the local resident and visitors within Northwich.”

She added: “Dial West Cheshire has been in contact with current users of the service and those who have booked to update on the closure of the information centre. Both Dial West Cheshire and the council continue to locate an alternative option within Northwich.”

The wider Weaver Square development is expected to start in 2026, with the market also being relocated to Barons Quay.
