A SUPERMARKET giant is eyeing a move into a former gym premises in Winsford.

Iceland could be set to open a new store at the former Intersport and DW Fitness in the town.

While the company is staying tight lipped, planning documents show approval has been granted for new signage at the building.

A spokesperson for Iceland said: “We are exploring opportunities for future growth in Winsford.

“Any updates will be shared in due course.”

On September 3, Iceland Foods Limited submitted a planning application for illuminated and non-illuminated signage to Cheshire West and Chester Council.

A letter included in the application, prepared by Ray Robinson Planning and Consultancy, states the signs would be installed at Unit 1 on Jubilee Way.

This unit was most recently home to the Intersport sports store and DW Fitness gym, which closed down in 2020.

Meanwhile, drawings clearly show ‘Iceland Winsford’ branding, with plans to install signs on the front, side and rear of the unit.

The application also states the advertisements would be put in place from November 3, 2024, for a period of five years.

On Tuesday (September 24), the plans were officially greenlit by Cheshire West and Chester Council.

In a report outlining the decision, case officer Gail Nickson wrote: “Taking into account the material provisions of the development plan and all other relevant factors, it is considered the proposed signage would have no unacceptable impact on amenity or public safety.

“It is therefore recommended that advertisement consent be granted.”
