A CHURCH in Winsford with a strong international congregation is tapping into its culinary skills to help make an upcoming anniversary one to remember.

On Saturday, September 28, Christ Church Wharton, on Crook Lane, is celebrating 175 years since its consecration back in 1849, just 12 years into Queen Victoria's reign.

Celebrations begin at 11am and are open to all, and will include the usual music, bouncy castle, face painting, stalls, barbecue, and a communal ‘hymn sing’ to round off the day.

In addition to its thriving local congregation, Christ Church has ‘a goodly number of like-minded Christian’s from around the world’ according to the Reverend Chris Pierce, its vicar.

What’s more, Christ Church’s international worshippers will be tempting visitors by showcasing classic dishes from their homelands at the anniversary celebration.

Rev Chris said: “Being a conservative evangelical congregation, Christ Church attracts not only multi-generational Winsford families, but also a goodly number of like-minded Christians from around the world who’ve made Winsford home.

“Guests will have the chance to sample some native dishes from the parish’s international members."

Wharton’s official parish church, work to build Christ Church began in 1843, but the actual date of its consecration was December 1849.

Given the cooler December weather, parishioners chose to celebrate in the summer months, when there is a better chance of nice weather.

Church Warden, Dave Greenwood, said: “We want everyone to come by and take part as we celebrate our 175th anniversary.”

Proceeds from the celebration will be donated to St Luke’s Hospice.
