VULNERABLE young people in Winsford have been given a welcome boost.

The Better Start programme, which supports 16-25-year-olds not in education, employment, or training, has been extended.

The initiative, delivered by Youth Fed, aims to improve participants’ life skills, build their confidence and develop employability tools.

Cheshire West and Chester Council have now announced they will use some of their UK Shared Prosperity Funding (UKSPF) to extend the initiative.

Councillor Nathan Pardoe said: “Cheshire West and Chester Council are pleased to be able to support Youth Fed in helping our vulnerable young residents.

“Supporting this programme is the right thing to do for the next generation, and also helps young people to develop the skills and the confidence to achieve their ambitions and overcome challenges.”

The number of young people not in education, employment or training nationally has increased following the COVID pandemic.

This figure is predicted to grow further following the latest wave of exam results.

The successful Better Start programme has been funded through Winsford Town Council, Cheshire Community Foundation and ‘Awards for All’ National Lottery funding.

This UKSPF contribution means that a further 60 young people will benefit from additional support, provided between August 2024 and March 2025.

Kevin Bradburne, director of operations for Youth Fed said: "Youth Fed appreciates the support from Cheshire West and Chester Council, enabling us to extend our capacity to deliver crucial support to vulnerable young people in our community.

“The introduction of four new 12-week courses ensures that we can maintain consistent support in the Winsford area, empowering more young people to secure opportunities in further education or employment.

‘This collaboration is essential in protecting their futures and enhancing their prospects for a brighter life."
