PUPILS at a Northwich primary school have gained international recognition for raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainability.

Wincham Community Primary has once again been gained Eco-Schools Green Flag status following students continued efforts.

The Eco-Schools programme was established in 1994 and since the Church Street school first engaged with it, it has made a number of accomplishments.

This has included integrating environmental sustainability into the curriculum, which has led to shared projects about recycling, plastic pollution and land use, taught at both Wincham and its partner school Njoro D.E.B. Primary School in Kenya.

Over the course of the 2023/24 academic year Wincham pupils built on these achievements by tackling litter in the local park and creating a school reusing/recycling station for uniform, books, batteries, and print cartridges.

Speaking about their achievements, staff member and eco-coordinator Emma Blades said: "All of our eco-champions have taken their role very seriously and it has been a privilege to work alongside them as they seek to positively impact our planet for themselves and future generations.

"Everyone at Wincham is very proud of their efforts and the difference they have already made."

The Eco-Schools programme is now implemented in more than 70 countries worldwide, and last year more than 1.4 million pupils attended an Eco-School in England.

The programme follows a tried-and-trusted seven-step framework, that encourages young people to explore a variety of environmental issues before spearheading environmental action in their school and local community.

Eco-Schools England manager, Adam Flint, said: "The Eco-Schools’ Green Flag is an international benchmark that demonstrates a commitment to fighting climate change and high standard of sustainable practice.

"Students and staff who earn this award deserve recognition for their dedication toward protecting our planet.

"Every day, they demonstrate that each of us can contribute to making our planet a better, more sustainable, place."
