PARALYMPIC gold medallist, Poppy Maskill, has been selected as one of Team GB’s flag bearers for the Paralympics closing ceremony.
The world champion swimmer made her Paralympic debut in Paris and won an astonishing five medals, including three golds, in the S14 category.
The 19-year-old achieved a world record time in the S14 women’s 100m butterfly on August 29, as well as her fastest time of the year in the S14 women’s 200m freestyle where she secured silver.
The former Middlewich Rose Queen has won more than medals in her Paralympic debut, as she has captured the hearts of the nation.
She became the golden girl of the pool in Paris, collecting the joint most medals won by a British athlete at the games alongside fellow swimmer, Alice Tai.
Poppy has now been selected to represent Great Britain as one of the flag bearers in the closing ceremony this evening, Sunday.
“The butterfly was my favourite as it was my first Paralympic medal and a world record,” she said.
“Next time I really want to win five golds. I had an amazing time, and I can’t wait to carry the flag.”
The 19-year-old will carry the flag alongside Para-Taekwondo’s Matt Bush, who also made his Paralympic debut in Paris.
When she returns to Cheshire after the games, the former Northwich Centurion and Winsford Swim Team competitor will also be awarded the freedom of her hometown.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic closing ceremony will take place at the Stade de France this evening and is due to start at 7.30pm on Channel 4.
