A BOXING club will welcome the community to its new home.

Superbox is preparing to host an open day following its move to Rudheath Leisure Centre.

Founder Thomas Bunby is hoping to encourage more people to take up boxing, with adults and children invited to give it a go.

The 59-year-old said: “Hopefully this event will help put us on the map.

“I’m really looking forward to opening up to the community.

“It’s a really exciting time for the club, I’m loving it!”

Thomas added: “Boxing is great for fitness and mental health, I know that myself as I have struggled with my mental health.

“It’s brilliant for mental health, as are most sports. Any exercise is good for your wellbeing.”

Thomas started Superbox with his nephew, Steven Bunby, in 2021.

Having worked at another club previously, the pair decided to call it a day.

However, they ended up being flooded with messages asking them to keep coaching.

“We had loads of people asking us where we were going. Eventually we had that many people asking us that we decided to find somewhere to start our own club,” said Thomas.

The club was initially based at Supergym in Winnington.

With the club’s growth showing no signs of slowing, Tom and Steven decided the time had come to find a new venue.

On July 1 this year, Superbox officially moved into its new home at Rudheath Leisure Centre.

“We had been searching for a while, we couldn’t take any more members on where we were because we were too small.

“So, we had to find premises and we came up with this.

“It’s a lot better. We’ve got a ring, we’ve got about 15 bags. It’s just better all around, it’s great to have our own space.”

Today the club has around 50 members, with upwards of 20 youngsters attending their weekly kids sessions.

Asked if he ever expected the club to be this successful, Tom added: “I was hoping it would be!

“It’s been brilliant, it’s good to see so many kids coming along.

“We’re a non-profit, a Community Interest Company.

“So, all of the money goes back into the club. The more members we have, the better club we have.”

Saturday’s open day will feature demonstrations by professional boxer Kyle Davies, merchandise giveaways, refreshments and the chance to give boxing a go yourself.

Then, on October 18, Superbox will host its second-ever home show.

The event, at Winnington Park Rugby Club, will showcase some of the club’s members.
