AN inquest has been opened after a motorcyclist died in hospital two weeks on from a serious crash in Northwich.

James Leonard Higgins sustained life-threatening injuries following a crash on the A533 on July 26.

The 56-year-old, of Heber Walk in Northwich, was taken to the emergency department at Leighton Hospital before being transferred to critical care the following day.

On August 11, while still at Leighton Hospital, Mr Higgins suffered a cardiac arrest and efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

At Cheshire Coroner’s Court on Wednesday (August 28) senior coroner Jacqueline Devonish opened an inquest into Mr Higgins’ death.

A case review will take place on October 27 ahead of the full inquest on February 11, 2025.

Following the crash, Cheshire Police launched an appeal for witnesses and video footage.

Officers were called to the A533, at the junction with Jack Lane in Davenham, at around 4.40pm on July 26.

Upon arrival they found a white Honda motorcycle which Mr Higgins had been riding had collided with a white Mitsubishi Outlander.

Speaking prior to Mr Higgins’ death, Inspector Steve Griffiths of the Serious and Complex Investigation Unit said: “This was a serious collision which has left a man with life-threatening injuries, and we’re committed to doing all we can to establish what took place.

“As part of our investigation, we are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage of it.

“We’re also keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may have any dashcam footage of the vehicles involved in the minutes prior to the collision.”
